How safe is Hot Air Ballooning?

Hot Air Ballooning is very safe as long as it is the number one priority of the pilot. We have a 100% safety record. Our highly qualified pilot has FAA Commercial licenses and more than 20 years flying experience. We have lifted off more than a 1000 times! We are also members of the Balloon Federation of America.

Are there any passenger restrictions?

YES.

  1. Passengers must be able to see over the basket. (at least 4 ft. tall).
  2. Any passenger under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian in order to sign the boarding pass at the time of flight.
  3. Passengers must be able to stand for at least one hour (the length of the flight).
  4. Passengers must be able to walk about 2 city blocks at a leisurely pace.
  5. Passengers must be able to withstand a jar or jolt upon landing, equivalent to jumping off three steps or about 30".

What is the best time of day to fly?

The best times are usually just after sunrise and 1-2 hours before sunset. These times provide safe winds that are the most calm and stable. As it happens, these times also offer some of the most beautiful flights.

What weather conditions will you fly in?

The decision to fly is made by the Pilot. We won't launch with surface winds exceeding 10-mph. Nor will we lift off in any unstable weather conditions. If the weather is not cooperative, the flight will be postponed and rescheduled at the passengers' alternative time and date (subject to availability).

Winter Flying and cold days...Is it colder during the flight?

There is technically a 3.5 degree (F) reduction per every 1000 feet, but usually its less than that. As long as passengers are dressed appropriately for the conditions on the ground, they should be fine during the flight. There is no wind chill during flight. We suggest that passengers wear hats, sun glasses and sneakers or hiking boots.

Where and when do we meet?

We meet at least one hour before sunrise, or 21/2-3 hours before sunset. Meeting times, along with the weather, are always confirmed the day before and the day of the flight. Arriving on time is very important. Late arrival may jeopardize your flight.

How long is the flight?

You can expect the actual flight time to be about an hour. Plan on spending a total of three hours with us. That allows times for the pre-flight briefing, inflation, flight, landing, pack-up and returning to the launch site.

How many passengers can fly in the balloons?

Our balloons carry up to four people, depending on weight, plus a FAA certified pilot.

How many people does it take to inflate the balloon?

Depending upon the size of the balloon, one person is able to perform this function. We employ 2-3 crew people for each launch. We encourage passengers to participate and help the crew during both inflation and pack-up. It definitely will add to the experience but this is at the discretion of each passenger.

What kind of fuel is used?

Propane. We carry up to 40 gallons of propane for each flight. Propane is the same fuel you use in your backyard grill.

What kind of fabrics are used for ballooning?

The balloon is made of Rip-stop nylon, dacron polyester or taffeta. All fabrics are tear proof and safety certified by the manufacturer.

What are the baskets made out of?

Baskets are always made of strong but light materials like wicker, fiberglass or aluminum. Wicker is traditional.

Clothing and Cameras?

We suggest long pants (year round), flat comfortable shoes (no heels) and layered clothing. Hats are recommended (especially in the summer) due to radiant heat from the burners during takeoff. Bring cameras of course!

How do you steer a balloon?

A balloon flies in the direction of the wind. Wind directions can change with altitude so increasing or decreasing the balloon altitude can affect a change in direction.

What is a Tether?

A tether is defined as tying the balloon to the ground while it's partially or fully inflated. Very often, tethering is utilized to create an advertising "buzz" for a business. As you can expect, a tethered balloon will attract lots of attention. This presents a great centerpiece for backyard parties and other events.

What is a glow?

A glow is really the same as a tether. The only difference is that during a glow, it is after dark (hence the name). When the light of the burner goes into the balloon, the balloon will light up and "GLOW" like a light bulb.
